Supply Chain Shipping Journeys Become Longer Due To Geopolitics

Global shipping offers several pinch points or potential bottlenecks spread across the world's seas and oceans. There is potential for geopolitics to interrupt these recognised routes making journeys longer in both time and nautical distance. This in turn would have a major impact on not just cost, but also marine and shipping logistics.

Supply Chain Shipping Journeys Become Longer Due To Geopolitics

As tankers, car-carriers, cruise ships and various merchant vessels navigate the Malacca Strait, the presence of unlit fishing boats weaving through shipping lanes at night makes it one of the world's most challenging sea areas to transit, even in times of peace. In the event of a major war in Asia, these challenges could escalate significantly, with hundreds of vessels hastily leaving international waters in the middle of the Strait, seeking potential safety within the national territorial waters of nearby neutral nations.

The Strait, positioned between Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, serves as the entry point from the Indian Ocean into the South China Sea, acting as a crucial maritime choke point for the transportation of goods manufactured in Asia to the rest of the world. It also plays a vital role in carrying a substantial portion of Asia's oil and gas, including three-quarters of China's supply.

Currently, the immediate threat to shipping in the region is relatively limited, though there are some areas of concern where shipping companies are taking action such especially around the Gulf of Aden, where Houthi militants have targeted multiple vessels since the start of the conflict across Gaza and Israel which is ongoing. In the Gulf of Aden, these attacks, along with attempted and successful hijackings by small boats, represent the most significant disruption to maritime trade since the peak of the Somali piracy crisis in 2011.

We also have the Black Sea conflict with Ukraine and Russia which is accessed via the Bosporus Strait. The potential for further conflict or geopolitical events globally is open to change very quickly with global powers seeking influence, territory and resources. As the word becomes smaller shipping distances could actually get longer. This would impact shipping and marine emissions significantly. Virtually all ships involved are part of the global supply chain. Utilising AI in Supply Chain Management

While AI has long played a role in supply chain management, the emergence of generative AI technology is opening up new avenues for process automation. An often-overlooked facet of digital transformation in the manufacturing sector is supply chain traceability, which has the potential to enhance efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. According to the World Economic Forum, digital technologies, if scaled effectively, could contribute to a significant reduction of up to 20% in carbon emissions by 2050 within the three highest-emitting sectors being energy, materials, and mobility.

Utilising AI in Supply Chain Management

Supply chain traceability is a vital sub-component of digital transformation within manufacturing. In today's intricate global marketplace, traceability has become a critical factor for businesses spanning various industries and their supply chains. The World Economic Forum outlines three essential steps for scaling digital adoption while simultaneously curbing global emissions:

1. Data Transformation: Businesses should ensure that their data is shared, autonomous, interconnected, and promotes transparency. This includes tasks like identifying and tracking source materials, optimizing routes, and enhancing operational efficiency. Investment in new data architectures and the integration of recognised frameworks into internal reporting structures is essential to ensure data availability, standardisation, and shareability across value chains and with external partners.

2. Skills Development: To harness the power of digital technologies and transform processes in high-emission industries, companies must prioritize digital inclusion and skill development for their current and future workforce. Ensuring access to new technologies and the necessary skills is crucial.

3. Collaborative Efforts: Encouraging collaboration among digital, sustainability, and operations teams within businesses, as well as across value chains and industries, is paramount. Partnerships involving private companies, start-ups, technology providers, investors, and public agencies will play a pivotal role in scaling investments, mitigating technology risks, and accelerating knowledge sharing.

Grayford Industrial has already established robust digital systems and is well-positioned to leverage AI technologies. In an environment where transparency and sustainability are increasingly demanded across supply chains for ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting, technologies like barcodes, radio frequency identification, global positioning systems (GPS), and artificial intelligence (AI) offer abundant opportunities to maximise efficiency and inventory management within supply chains.

£1.9bn Lost In Income To UK SME's Due To Supply Chain Delays In 2022

According to recent research from Aldermore's SME Growth Index, approximately 3.3 million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), accounting for 60% of such businesses, have faced supply chain delays in the past year. The impact of these supply delays on SMEs has been significant, with one in four businesses (27%) experiencing financial consequences.

£1.9bn Lost In Income To UK SME's Due To Supply Chain Delays In 2022

These delays resulted in increased operational costs (40%), disruptions to ongoing projects (36%), and challenges in securing new business deals (23%). Industries heavily reliant on materials, like wholesale, retail, and franchising sectors, were particularly vulnerable. These SMEs estimated losses five times greater than the average business due to the challenges posed by supply chain delays.

One concerning finding is that more than half of the businesses surveyed (65%) are at risk of supply chain shocks because of their lack of awareness. Around 36% of decision-makers are only aware of their direct customers and suppliers, while 29% have no knowledge of their supply chain partners at all.

Despite the risks, a positive trend emerged from the research. A significant number of businesses are taking proactive measures to address these issues. Around 58% of SMEs have conducted comprehensive supply chain audits or established contingency plans to minimize future disruptions and better prepare for potential problems. This approach can help them navigate challenges effectively and safeguard their growth opportunities.

Tim Boag, Group Managing Director of Business Finance at Aldermore, commented: “Supply chain issues can impede the growth of SMEs, limiting their ability to reliably deliver for their customers on existing projects or pursue new opportunities. With delays still making headlines and impacting profits, it’s important for every business leader to consider if there are any vulnerabilities that expose them. This can be done through a supply chain audit or the development of a contingency plan. This will help build stronger relationships and clearer communications so businesses can react quickly should they be notified of changes that might impact their supply chains. With the current backdrop of economic uncertainty, SMEs need to take steps to protect themselves against unwanted shocks.”

UK Supply Chain Boosted by £1.4 billion With Longer Lorries

The UK economy is forecasted to be boosted by £1.4 billion as longer lorries roll out on roads. Legislation change due in 2023 will allow longer lorries and longer semi-trailers on roads leading to savings of 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the air. The benefits to UK logistics will be invaluable for larger loads across all supply chains. A summary of the changes is presented below:

  • Laws introduced to permit longer semi-trailer combinations up to 18.55 metres on GB roads - 2.05 metres longer than standard size
  • Longer lorries expected to bring £1.4 billion boost for the UK’s economy - supporting productivity and saving 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide
  • Follows 33 unprecedented government measures to support the haulage industry and supply chains, level up transport and grow the economy
UK Supply Chain Boosted by £1.4 billion With Longer Lorries

These new lorries will move the same volume of goods, but will use 8% fewer journeys than current trailers. This will generate an expected £1.4 billion in economic benefits and take one standard-size trailer off the road for every 12 trips.

As part of efforts to grow the economy and cut emissions, the government is changing regulations to allow longer trailers on GB roads, which it estimates will save 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. These longer trailers, known as longer semi-trailers (LST) measure up to 2.05 metres longer than a standard semi-trailer and can be towed by a lorry.

The move follows an 11-year trial to ensure LSTs are used safely on roads, and operators will be encouraged to put extra safety checks and training in place. The trial demonstrated that LSTs were involved in around 61% fewer personal injury collisions than conventional lorries.

Revisiting Supply Chain Security Guidance

The National Cyber Security Centre for the UK Proposing a series of 12 principles, designed to help you establish effective control and oversight of your supply chain. Most organisations rely upon suppliers to deliver products, systems, and services. You probably have a number of suppliers yourself, it's how we do business. But, supply chains can be large and complex, involving many suppliers doing many different things. Effectively securing the supply chain can be hard because vulnerabilities can be inherent, or introduced and exploited at any point in the supply chain. A vulnerable supply chain can cause damage and disruption.

Revisiting Supply Chain Security Guidance

12 Principles for Supply Chain Security. These principles have been designed to help you gain and maintain the necessary level of control over your supply chain:

1. Understand what needs to be protected and why
2. Know who your suppliers are and build an understanding of what their security looks like
3. Understand the security risk posed by your supply chain
4. Communicate your view of security needs to your suppliers
5. Set and communicate minimum security requirements for your suppliers
6. Build security considerations into your contracting processes and require that your suppliers do the sam
e 7. Meet your own security responsibilities as a supplier and consumer
8. Raise awareness of security within your supply chain
9. Provide support for security incidents
10. Build assurance activities into your supply chain management
11. Encourage the continuous improvement of security within your supply chain
12. Build trust with suppliers

The NCSC supports the most critical organisations in the UK, the wider public sector, industry, SMEs as well as the general public. When incidents do occur, NCSC provide effective incident response to minimise harm to the UK, help with recovery, and learn lessons for the future. The NCSC provides a single point of contact for SMEs, larger organisations, government agencies, the general public and departments. We also work collaboratively with other law enforcement, defence, the UK’s intelligence and security agencies and international partners. In depth information can be found from the official UK NCSC website at https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/collection/supply-chain-security. The key factor is to ask yourself if your organisation measures up to each of the 12 principles. Give Grayford Industrial a call and we can discuss your supply chain requirements.

Windsor Framework Agreement Looks To Keep UK/NI Supply Chains Deeply Integrated

The Windsor Framework, aimed at resolving post-Brexit trade issues between the UK mainland and Northern Ireland (NI), has been unveiled, promising to maintain deeply integrated supply chains. The framework, which was the result of negotiations between UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President of the European Commission Ursula von de Leyen, proposes two lanes for goods traveling from the mainland to NI. Goods destined for NI will pass through the green lane and require no border checks, while those traveling on to the Republic of Ireland will go through the red lane and require checks as if they were entering the European Union.

Windsor Framework Agreement Looks To Keep UK/NI Supply Chains Deeply Integrated

The agreement intends to ensure that Northern Ireland remains deeply integrated into the UK's food supply chain and associated regulations and court oversight. Trade organizations have expressed support for the deal, which would replace former Prime Minister Boris Johnson's NI Protocol. However, it must receive approval from MPs in the House of Commons and parties in the NI Assembly.

The Windsor Framework is an international arrangement between the UK and the EU under which the parties commit to binding international law obligations, including changes to the Protocol itself. The UK and EU have made clear in the Political Declaration accompanying the Windsor Framework that the amended Protocol is governed by the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. The Windsor Framework addresses the Government’s position as set out in the July 2021 Command Paper. It respects the Act of Union and the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement and deals with the everyday issues people and businesses in Northern Ireland had faced as a result of the operation of the Protocol.

The proposed measures are fully aligned with and advance the UK’s commitments and responsibilities under the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement and the Act of Union, including protecting the economic rights of the people of Northern Ireland and ensuring just and equal treatment for the identity, ethos and aspirations of both communities. An agreement between the parties in this way provides for a durable and secure basis both to safeguard the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement and ensure respect for the Act of Union, as opposed to reliance on domestic primary legislation that would be temporary; only justified by a basis in the doctrine of necessity that would have to be continually under review; and which would be exposed to litigation in arbitration proceedings or before the Court of Justice of the EU.

Renewables Favoured Leading To Cuts In Oil & Gas Demand

It has been recently announced by BP that they will be reducing their forecasts for global long term demand for Oil and Gas up to 2035. This coincides with the increasing take up of renewable energy technologies and a focus on a greener environment. The recent spikes in crude oil and natural gas prices have also been a major factor in the drive towards renewables.

Renewables Favoured Leading To Cuts In Oil & Gas Demand

BP is involved globally in oil and petrochemical exploration, production and supply. Activities including the refining and selling of petroleum products including chemicals such as acetic acid, ethylene, polyethylene, and terephthalic acid. It has been reported that the company's strategy will gradually migrate from an international oil company focused on producing resources to an integrated energy company focused on delivering solutions for customers.

This will also see the adoption of renewable technologies and alternatives to traditional oil and gas based activities. The company is currently ranked as the eighth largest oil company in the world. Many leading global oil and gas companies have also announced that they will be looking at supply chain and business opportunities across alternative renewable technologies in the coming years.

DIT Supply Chains Resilience Framework Announced

As part of the government's work to improve the resilience of critical supply chains, the Department for International Trade (DIT) has developed a resilience framework which highlights 5 areas to be explored when reducing dependencies in supply chains. It is designed to be an aide for those looking to mitigate supply side risks in their supply chains and to support greater long-term resilience. More detailed guidance for businesses is also available.

The 5 areas are as follows:

  • Diversification – identify alternate source of supply to create flexibility in the supply chain
  • International partnerships – work with international partners to identify common challenges, bring down barriers to trade and strengthen the resilience of international supply chains and systems
  • Stockpiling and surge capacity – identify whether it may be beneficial to hold stocks and strategic reserves of components or goods and consider whether surge capacity can be included in contracts
  • Onshoring – identify whether increasing or expanding domestic capacity might be helpful in reducing risks
  • Demand management – identify whether it may be beneficial to manage the demand for components or goods, considering substitutes and alternatives, innovation, and circularity

UK Oil & Gas Production Set To Be Boosted

Oil and gas production in the North Sea could be boosted in the coming years through a series of measures recommended by the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA).

UK Oil & Gas Production Set To Be Boosted

The recommendations were made in the latest Wells Insight Report, which found that drilling activity remained low in 2021, as industry continued its recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pre-pandemic drilling operations were taking place in 141 wells in 2019. But last year drilling operations began on 66 wells, including five exploration, five appraisal and 56 development wells, similar to levels recorded in 2020. Production totalled 480 million barrels in 2021, compared with 600 million in 2019.

However, a focus on second wellbores, the new licensing round and maintaining existing wells could all help boost production in years to come, according to the new report.

UK Government Takes Next Steps To Boost Domestic Energy Production

To bolster the UK's energy security, the UK government has today lifted the moratorium on shale gas production in England, and confirmed its support for a new oil and gas licensing round, expected to be launched by the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) in early October.

UK Government Takes Next Steps To Boost Domestic Energy Production

In light of the conflict in Ukraine and weaponisation of energy, the government is taking concrete steps to increase home-grown sources of energy, reduce the UK's reliance of foreign imports, and explore all possible options to boost domestic energy security. To do so, it is appropriate to pursue all means for increasing UK oil and gas production, including through new oil and gas licences and shale gas extraction.

The new licensing round is expected to lead to over 100 new licences, as previously announced by the Prime Minister, forming part of the government's plans to accelerate domestic energy supply. Under the new licensing round, which follows the outcome of the Climate Compatibility Checkpoint, the NSTA is expected to make a number of new 'blocks' of the UK Continental Shelf available, for applicants to bid for licences.

UK Government Introduces Energy (Oil and Gas) Profits Levy

The UK oil and gas fiscal regime taxes profits earned by companies from the production of oil and gas in the UK and on the UKCS. The regime is kept separate from other taxes on commercial profit by the operation of a ‘ring fence’ which prevents losses from other activities being imported into the regime.

UK Government Introduces Energy (Oil and Gas) Profits Levy

This measure introduces a new, temporary 25% levy on ring fence profits of oil and gas companies. This is in addition to Ring Fence Corporation Tax which is charged at 30% and the Supplementary Charge which is charged at 10%. This takes the headline rate of tax from 40% to 65%.

The levy also includes a new 80% investment allowance which will be available to companies at the point of investment on qualifying expenditure. With oil and gas prices rising substantially over the past year due to global circumstances, there has been a significant increase in profits earned from UK oil and gas extraction. Oil prices have nearly doubled since early last year and gas prices have more than doubled. Following these record high prices, the government is introducing the Energy (Oil and Gas) Profits Levy, a new 25% levy on the extraordinary profits the oil and gas sector is making. The revenue raised by the levy will help fund additional support on the cost of living.

The government has also been clear that the UK will continue to require oil and gas during the transition to Net Zero, and that it wants to see the oil and gas sector reinvest its profits to support the economy, jobs, and the UK’s energy security. To encourage this, a new ‘super-deduction’ style investment allowance is being introduced within the levy to provide an immediate incentive for the oil and gas sector to invest in UK extraction. This measure takes effect for accounting periods beginning on or after 26 May 2022. The legislation includes a sunset clause, which will remove the levy after 31 December 2025.

UK Gasoline Prices Surge To Record Highs

Petrol and Diesel prices at the pumps in the UK are now at record levels exceeding the £2 per litre mark in some locations. In many cases a full tank of fuel is conteing over £100 for domestic end users across the country. Record fuel prices are adding to an already severe cost-of-living crisis in the UK, with inflation hitting 9.1 percent in May, which is the highest since 1982. The last 10 years with the Oil & Gas industry as a whole have seen some of the most turbulent times from a UK and global perspective.

UK Gasoline Prices Surge To Record Highs

The price of crude oil was impacted significantly during the pandemic as travel restrictions saw a collapse in demand. With all restrictions over in 2022 demand has since returned back to normal levels.Saudi Arabia is the biggest exporter of crude oil and has just recently announced that it will be raising the price of a barrel of oil. This will potentially see further increases in pump price values as we head into the second half of 2022. Aside from crude oil there is the demand for natural gas which is in high demand across the world especially in Europe.Natural gas is also becoming viewed as being of equal importance across some countries as a strategic commodity which is much sought after. The next six months of 2022 will define the landscape for next year across the board with fossil fuels becoming major elements for many economies.

June 2022
UK Oil & Gas industry Comment Over Windfall Tax

The UK's Finance Minister Rishi Sunak has imposed a windfall tax on oil and gas majors as the government looks to alleviate the country's well publicised cost of living crisis. “The oil and gas sector is making extraordinary profits not as the result of recent changes to risk-taking or innovation or efficiency but as the result of surging global commodity prices driven in part by Russia’s war, and for that reason, I am sympathetic to the argument to tax those profits fairly.” Rishi Sunak stated recently in the House of Commons.

UK Oil & Gas industry Comment Over Windfall Tax

The Chief Executive of OEUK (Offshore Energies United Kingdom) Deirdre Michie has been in communication with Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng stating that any windfall tax could put investment at risk. She stated that the industry shares concern about the impact of rising energy prices on consumers and went on to say "We are proud that we are able to help by contributing a predicted £7.8bn in UK taxes this year alone. Those payments, equivalent to £279 per home, can help the government soften the pressure for households. "This year is not a one-off. Between 2021 and 2026-27 the OBR predicts our industry will pay around £23bn in UK tax."

The independent Office for Budget Responsibility has calculated the tax UK fossil fuel energy producers are expected to pay this year to be nearly twenty times the £400m paid in 2020. Companies including BP and Shell raked in a combined over £25 billion in profit last year on the back of increased global oil and natural gas prices. Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine has also added to the pressures pushing prices up even further over fears the conflict will lead to energy shortages

Supply Chains Pressured Heading Into Summer 2022

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, increased covid measures in China and increases in global commodity costs have seen increasing pressures placed on the global supply chain. This makes for a perfect storm as we head into the summer and middle of 2022. China accounts for around 12% of all global trade so the impact of covid represents a major disruption over two years after it first appeared.

Supply Chains Pressured Heading Into Summer 2022

The impact of the conflict in Eastern Europe is not yet fully known and could continue for many months or even into 2023. The focus of Grayford Industrial has been on introducing significant step change improvements to our processes and offering which aims to offset increased costs and improve service efficiency gains.

Freight rates have also seen triple digit increases along with related transportation activities. This is on a global scale impacting all businesses inside and outside of the logistics sector. Our focus has been one where we combat increased transportation costs, keeping up with customer and industry demands, source consistent and reliable carrier partners, deploy smart technologies at all stages and monitor our delivery performance and key performance indicators.

Energy Companies Warning For UK Oil & Gas Dependency

Energy security for the UK is now front and centre of the big energy debate. Norway is now UK’s primary gas supplier and declining North Sea output means UK faces importing 80% of its gas and oil within a decade, warns a recent OEUK report. "Energy security is now national security," says chief executive Deirdre Michie, warning that long-term investment and policy-making will be essential for the energy transition.

Energy Companies Warning For UK Oil & Gas Dependency

A spokesperson for OEUK stated there could be import dependency before 2037 without the confidence and ongoing investment over the next two years. But with more commitment to the industry, and if prices hold up, the decline in output from UK waters could be limited to 5% per year, it suggests. The message, issued in OEUK's annual business outlook, is aimed at the UK government which is drawing up an energy security strategy, with publication delayed probably until next week. The UK government has said energy security is its "absolute priority".

OEUK is a membership organisation championioning the UK offshore energies industry with a focus on being the representative body that champions the whole sector, the definitive source of information about the UK upstream and the gateway to industry networks and expertise. Their aim is to become the leading association within the UK energy industry, ensuring the UK North Sea remains an internationally attractive place to do business.

March 2022
Prime Minister’s Energy Security Roundtable With UK Oil & Gas Industry Leaders

Prime Minister Boris Johnson hosted a roundtable of leaders in the UK’s offshore oil and gas industry to discuss domestic energy security. This is part of a series of engagement by the Government across the UK’s energy sectors, including with renewable and nuclear companies in the coming days and weeks. The UK Prime Minister reaffirmed his steadfast commitment to the North Sea oil and gas industry as a key asset in the UK’s plans for achieving greater energy independence, in ensuring the country’s smooth transition to net zero and in being part of the solutions needed for a cleaner future, which are ever more crucial as we move away from imported hydrocarbons following the conflict in Ukraine. This was welcomed and echoed by industry leaders, who made clear that the oil and gas industry are fully behind the UK’s energy transition.

Prime Minister’s Energy Security Roundtable With UK Oil & Gas Industry Leaders

The Prime Minister and CEOs discussed increasing investment in the North Sea oil and gas industry and boosting supply of domestic gas. This included how the UK can remove barriers facing investors and developers, and help projects come online more quickly. They agreed to work together going forwards to help accelerate this further.

The roundtable comes ahead of the publication of the UK’s plans for greater energy security this month, with renewable energy, nuclear and domestic gas all a crucial part of achieving its aims. It also follows the UK’s recent decision to end imports of Russian oil over the course of this year. Those represented from the oil and gas industry included: the Oil and Gas Authority, Blackstone Energy Partners, Bluewater Energy, BP, Carlyle International Energy Partners, Equinor, Esso, Greenergy, Harbour Energy, Neptune Energy, Offshore Energies UK, Prax Group, TotalEnergies and Shell.

UK Government Seeks Views On New Oil & Gas Climate Checkpoint

Just over a month ago the UK government launched a consultation on the design of a new climate compatibility checkpoint for the oil and gas industry. The consultation will give interested parties, including oil and gas industry stakeholders, the opportunity to input on the design of the new climate compatibility checkpoint. Respondents are invited to give their views on the proposed principles, structure, and content of the checkpoint. You can view the consultation here which runs until 28th February 2022. UK Government Seeks Views On New Oil & Gas Climate Checkpoint

Using the feedback given from this consultation, the checkpoint will then be established as a new measure to assess potential future licences. This checkpoint will ensure any future licences are granted only on the basis that they are compatible with the UK’s climate change objectives. If the evidence suggests that a future licensing round would undermine the UK’s climate goals or ability to reach net zero, it will not go ahead.

As world leaders in the global effort to tackle climate change, the UK is driving the global shift away from fossil fuels. However, we recognise the important role that oil and gas will play over the coming decades as the UK transitions to low carbon solutions, and the Climate Change Committee acknowledges that the transition to non-fossil forms of energy cannot happen overnight. This checkpoint will enable oil and gas to provide important security for the UK’s energy mix, and to be used for the production of many everyday essentials like medicines, plastics, cosmetics and household appliances, whilst minimising emissions.

Will Your Supply Chain Be Stable In 2022?

The last 12 months of the pandemic across the global supply chain witnessed significant volatility and instability. 2021 will go down as a year of fluctuations across many aspects such as the green agenda, shipping logistics, raw material availability, finished goods lead times, technology innovations, fuel price increases and price inflation as a general upward trend. The last 12 months presented a year in which shortcomings were exposed in global supply chains and the wide-reaching impact of continuous supply disruption rose to the top of the discussion list for management teams. Will Your Supply Chain Be Stable In 2022?

All of these factors make 2022 even more important for having a robust, flexible and progressive supply chain system which is managed with a stakeholder mentality. More advancements took place with digitisation and increasing environmental challenges. Both of these have to be converted to an advantage for your business. Grayford Industrial is at the forefront of supply chain management with our impressive service offering. Real logistics, products and people form part of our formula. Risk management will be a critical component for all industries within the global supply chain. Grayford Industrial offers a complete solution to not just help mitigate supply chain issues, but to create a stakeholder mentality across all aspects of this as a critical business function.

July 2021
A Decade Of Change In The Oil & Gas Industries

The last ten years have seen major changes in society, industry, governance and habitual trends, which in turn have impacted on the Oil and Gas industry sector on a global basis. Since 2010, the stock values of the four biggest companies in the sector have fallen by more than 50% on average. The Oil and Gas sector also now ranks as one of the smallest in the S&P 500 with less than 3% of representation. Attitudes, perceptions, recruitment, less demand, overproduction and a drive towards renewables have all taken their toll. This on top of some of the lowest oil and gas prices seen for many years.

A Decade Of Change In The Oil & Gas Industries

As the sector turns to its next chapter, there is a replacement sector offering renewable energy in the form of wind, solar and battery storage. This is being seen across many sectors including the automotive industry, where massive changes are being led by government regulation. The population, investors, boards, employees, suppliers and customers are now more increasingly concerned with climate change. New technology is also a driver which will see advancements in aerial and flight based logistics. This will take years but the die is cast for change. Grayford Industrial embraces the change being at the forefront of innovation and technology to ensure optimum operations.

Smart Factory Procurement & Supply Chain Digitisation

Smart Factory is the vision of a production environment in which production facilities and logistics systems are organised without human intervention. The Smart Factory is no longer a vision. While different model factories represent the feasible, many enterprises already clarify with examples practically, how the Smart Factory functions. The technical foundations on which the Smart Factory - the intelligent factory - is based are cyber-physical systems that communicate with each other using the Internet of Things and Services. An important part of this process is the exchange of data between the product and the production line. This enables a much more efficient connection of the Supply Chain and better organisation within any production environment.

Smart Factory Procurement & Supply Chain Digitisation

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) fosters what has been called a "smart factory". Within modular structured smart factories, cyber-physical systems monitor physical processes, create a virtual copy of the physical world and make decentralised decisions. Over the internet of things, cyber-physical systems communicate and cooperate with each other and with humans in synchronic time both internally and across organizational services offered and used by participants of the value chain.

Oil Price & The Impact Of 2020 For Global Business

The last 12 months for the Oil & Gas industry have seen major changes enforced on the Oil and Gas sector as large stocks built up in parallel with a decrease in demand. Oil production companies have been faced with such a drop in demand that there were very few storage places available. A lack of agreement with major producers such as Russia and Saudi Arabia has also added to the situation with no conjoined global strategy. This all coming at a time when the thrust and enthusiasm for renewables and green energy just keeps getting stronger.

Oil Price & The Impact Of 2020 For Global Business

Brent Crude has recovered gradually over the last 12 months from a low of around $20 per barrel to a high this week of just under $70 per barrel. This demonstrates the volatility of the market over recent times, but is actually a continuation of the last 10 years with major highs and lows for Brent crude being seen in recent times.

The focus of Grayford Industrial has always been to support procurement across a diverse range of industries. We have seen highs and lows across all sectors over the last 20 years, with each issue presenting challenges for the here and now. All of the challenges present opportunities for our business model and we continue to diversify into new technologies and markets across all industrial sectors. Both diversity and technology are seen as key aspects of our business as we progress into the next decade.

UK Government launches Review into future offshore Oil & Gas Licensing

The Government today announced it will review its policy on the future UK offshore oil and gas licensing regime as part of the wider aim of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The review will ensure the Government has the information needed to plan for future oil and gas production in the UK, in a way that is aligned with tackling climate change. Initial findings and next steps will be published in the upcoming Energy White Paper.

UK Government launches Review into future offshore Oil & Gas Licensing

Over half of the UK’s electricity comes from clean sources including wind and solar energy. However, oil and natural gas are still required for heating, cooking and transport, and vital to the production of many everyday essentials like medicines, plastics, cosmetics and household appliances. This is likely to remain the case over the coming decades as the UK transitions to low carbon solutions. The independent Committee on Climate Change has recognised the ongoing demand for oil and natural gas, including it in all scenarios it proposed for how the UK meets its target for achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The oil and gas sector supports 270,000 jobs across the UK and plays a key role in developing the infrastructure and capability for green technologies such as carbon capture and storage and hydrogen power. The oil and gas sector is also a major source of tax revenue for public services and has provided over £330 billion to the UK Government from production taxation alone in today’s prices.

UK Oil & Gas Industry Welcomes Job Support

The UK’s offshore oil and gas industry has today welcomed the Chancellor’s announcement of support for employers, including the Job Retention Bonus and moves to support more traineeships and jobs for young people. The leading representative body for the sector OGUK said that the UK faces a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to deliver moves to a lower carbon and more diverse energy mix, reinforcing the importance of the sector deal currently being discussed with the UK Government.

UK Oil & Gas Industry Welcomes Job Support

OGUK Chief Executive Deirdre Michie said: “The Chancellor’s announcement provides welcome support for companies in the UK’s offshore oil and gas industry affected by the immediate impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The continued volatility facing our sector however underlines the need for long-term and targeted support. In devastating circumstances the UK now faces a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to realise an energy transition which delivers affordable energy, supports jobs and enables our industry to put our skills to work to help cut emissions."

He commented further on the 2035 strategy by stating “Industry’s Roadmap 2035 offers a sensible blueprint which keeps net zero firmly on the agenda while also supporting energy communities to embrace new opportunities including carbon capture and hydrogen. Today’s funding for Direct Air Capture of CO2 is a welcome step in the right direction as part of the wider development and roll-out of Carbon Capture and Storage, and we look forward to continuing our work with the government to realise the full potential of our sector in delivering the UK’s energy future.”

Oil Price Suffers Biggest Fall Since 1991

A price war has broken out between Saudi Arabia and Russia leading to the largest fall in oil price seen for almost 30 years at just above the $30 per barrel mark. A previously agreed alliance between the two nations collapsed over a disagreement on outputs and sale price per barrel. A spokesperson from Russia stated that the historical agreement was more beneficial to the USA with the increase of shale companies entering the market.

Oil Price Suffers Biggest Fall Since 1991

"By yielding our own markets, we remove cheap Arab and Russian oil to clear a place for expensive US shale oil and ensure the effectiveness of its production," he told Russian state media on Sunday. The USA is now the largest oil producer in the world producing around 13 million barrels a day in the first quarter of 2020 so far. The price of oil had already fallen drastically in 2020 as the coronavirus began to spread internationally leading to a drop in demand for fuel, oil and gas across all economies.

In addition the underlying demand for energy is reducing with the advent of the recent coronavirus outbreak seeing thousands or flights cancelled, factories closed and a general reduction in oil consumption. The International Energy Agency has recently stated that it expands demand for oil and gas to contract this year which will be the first time since the recession of 2009.

The report shows that total employment for the UK oil and gas industry in 2018 was 259,900 with a forecast increase to 269,100 for 2019. Employment in the industry is split UK wide across 56% in England, 39% in Scotland, 4% in Wales and 1% in Northern Ireland. Every £1 million spent by the UK oil and gas industry supports eight supply chain jobs and induces a further eight jobs across the UK economy. Around 7% of those travelling offshore came from the EU with women representing just over 3% of the offshore workforce in 2018.

Oil & Gas Workforce Analysis Published By OGUK

A key element within the report is that increased productivity over the last few years has seen the overall figure of barrels per worker rise by 5% since last year and is a massive 57% higher than in 2014 which is only 5 years ago. Clearly the whole sector has invested in efficiency gains and improvements focused on productivity. A rise in drilling activity prompted an 18% increase in drilling personnel offshore. The central North Sea remains the area of greatest activity, with 49% of total offshore employment and capital investment is expected to stabilise in 2019 at around £5-5.5 billion.

Optimism Rises In The UK Oil & Gas Industry

A recent oil and gas survey was carried out by the Fraser of Allander Institute, with data being supported by the AGCC (Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce) focused mainly on Scottish based companies operating in Aberdeen. The survey highlighted a number of positive indicators such as attitudes to research and development which was recorded as being higher than at any time since 2007. The study said more than 70% of firms expected to make a profit this year. The report also found that 62% of contractor companies had an improved outlook for 2019, but that many areas of the supply chain were still facing challenges.

Optimism Rises In The UK Oil & Gas Industry

Industry body Oil and Gas UK (OGUK) delivered a report in March 2019 stating that a total of £200bn needed to be spent by exploration and production companies to fully exploit the UK oil and gas sector's remaining potential. The Business Outlook Report 2019 also highlighted the need for a focus on cost and efficiencies was the "new reality" for the sector.

The study revealed production had gradually increased by 20% over the past five years following over 10 years of decline in the UK Continental Shelf oil and gas region. Industry body Oil and Gas UK estimates that there are 10-20 billion barrels of oil still to be recovered from UK waters, about three quarters of which have not be drilled or even discovered.

Industry 4.0 & Its Impact On The Oil & Gas Industry

Industry 4.0 is a name given to the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. It includes cyber-physical systems, the Internet of things, cloud computing and cognitive computing. Industry 4.0 is commonly referred to as the fourth industrial revolution and it may have a huge impact on the oil and gas industry in the coming years.

Industry 4.0 fosters what has been called a "smart system". Within modular structured smart facilities, cyber-physical systems monitor physical processes, create a virtual copy of the physical world and make de-centralised decisions. Over the Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems communicate and cooperate with each other and with humans in real-time both internally and across organizational services offered and used by participants of the value chain.

Industry 4.0 & Its Impact On The Oil & Gas Industry

There are four design principles in Industry 4.0. These principles support companies in identifying and implementing Industry 4.0 scenarios:

  • Interconnection - The ability of machines, devices, sensors, and people to connect and communicate with each other via the Internet of Things (IoT) or the Internet of People (IoP)
  • Information Transparency - The transparency afforded by Industry 4.0 technology provides operators with vast amounts of useful information needed to make appropriate decisions. Interconnectivity allows operators to collect immense amounts of data and information from all points in the manufacturing process, thus aiding functionality and identifying key areas that can benefit from innovation and improvement.
  • Technical Assistance - First, the ability of assistance systems to support humans by aggregating and visualizing information comprehensively for making informed decisions and solving urgent problems on short notice. Second, the ability of cyber physical systems to physically support humans by conducting a range of tasks that are unpleasant, too exhausting, or unsafe for their human co-workers.
  • Decentralised Decisions - The ability of cyber physical systems to make decisions on their own and to perform their tasks as autonomously as possible. Only in the case of exceptions, interferences, or conflicting goals, are tasks delegated to a higher level.

Largest Gas Discovery in North Sea For Over 10 Years

When it peaked in 1999, production of North Sea oil was nearly 950,000 m³ (6 million barrels) per day. Natural gas production was nearly 280×109 m³ (10 trillion cubic feet) although British gas production has been declining since then. The latest find of a significant gas discovery in North Sea in CNOOC Glengorm project area, east of Aberdeen is being described as the biggest find in more than a decade.

Largest Gas Discovery in North Sea For Over 10 Years

The discovery was announced by Chinese state-owned company CNOOC which is equivalent to 250 million barrels of oil, the exploration well Glengorm was drilled to a total depth of 5,056 meters and encountered net gas and condensate pay zones with a total thickness of 37.6 meters. Further investigation and analysis development is planned, but it is understood it could be extracted using existing infrastructure.

Glengorm sits 118 miles (190km) east of Aberdeen, close to Total's Elgin-Franklin and Culzean fields, and could be tied back to one of their platforms. CNOOC Limited is China's largest producer of offshore crude oil and natural gas. It is a major subsidiary of China National Offshore Oil Corporation. Large oil company Total, owns a 25% stake in the Glengorm field being currently listed as the 8th largest oil company in the world.

Oil & Gas Industry Sector Outlook For 2019

The oil and gas sector has seen some unpredictable and volatile times over the last ten years. The price of a barrel of crude oil as seen major fluctuations over this time and is currently at a low end of the spectrum. 2018 saw a high level of change across all aspects of the sector and the next two paragraphs will summarise the main impact areas for the oil and gas industry expected in 2019.

Oil supply is controlled by some of the worlds most instable areas with some of the largest producers operating under sanctions and other instabilities at this time. The demand for energy is strong but being serviced by an ever increasing renewable source provision. Demand is strong being supported by energy policies, that may not be to the benefit of government energy policies. Natural gas has a perception of being a cleaner fuel with it being more positively viewed than oil and coal for example.

Oil & Gas Industry Sector Outlook For 2019

OPEC operates with 14 members including three of the top five producers, though Qatar’s membership is now outside of OPEC causing some uncertainty. The price of oil per barrel of crude is currently depressed being below $50 and there will be a lot of speculation on this and its impact on exploration investment. Fracking is now here to stay being welcomed in the US but not the UK, though this does represent a new market for supply and demand fulfilment. The US and China occupy the largest consumers globally followed by India, Japan and then Saudi Arabia with no EU countries being represented in the top five. There is a definite energy transition in developed nations with a shift to greener strategies which in turn will impact on what occurs in 2019.

November 2018
Positive UK Budget Tax Reaction From The Oil & Gas

The Chancellor held a budget on Monday 29th October 2018 making specific references to the UK Oil & Gas sector. A number of areas were covered including the amending of tax barriers, the simplification of tax laws relating to the sector and the provision of further support to the industry that is recognised as a vital one for the UK economy on a global scale.

Positive UK Budget Tax Reaction From The Oil & Gas

The government looks to have recognised that the sector could prosper with support kick starting new areas such as decommissioning whilst maintaining others such as direct investment in oil and gas extraction technologies. Investment and support will be welcomed by the sector especially in Scotland where the depressed crude oil price of the last few years caused a significant downturn in activity, jobs and development.

The outlook should be more positive with the UK government seeing more prosperity from tax cuts in the oil and gas sector, which should in turn assist in recover and also growth. The UK needs to be a hub of innovation in the coming years as exporters or knowledge, technology, innovation and expertise in addition to physical oil and gas. The Chancellor Philip Hammond stated the government is looking to “maintain headline tax rates at their current level”, putting the markets as ease with fewer concerns about cuts amid the steadily rising oil price seen during 2018. We will see how the sector evolves during 2019.

October 2018
Large Firms Commit To The Oil Industry Climate Initiative Group

Formed in 2014 the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) is a global organisation committed to a reduction in the carbon footprint within the industry sector. Chevron, ExxonMobil and Occidental Petroleum Corporation recently joined OGCI being recognised as some of the largest oil and gas companies in the world. These companies join many others that now account for 30% of the global oil and gas production across 130 countries. Other members include BP, CNPC, ENI, Equinor, Pemex, Petrobras, Repsol, Saudi Aramco, Shell and Total.

Large Firms Commit To The Oil Industry Climate Initiative Group

OGCI members are focused on the targets and aspirations of the Paris Agreement which will deal with OGCI member companies are dedicated to the ambition of the Paris Agreement to progress to net zero emissions in the second half of this century. The industry is changing rapidly and Grayford Industrial is matching this change by meeting the needs of its global customer base with new technologies and environmentally friendly innovations.

Oil & Gas Climate Initiative members have committed to planned reductions of methane emission by 2025. More information on specific targets can be found on the official OGCI website where they also offer the latest 2018 annual report. A full target is identified as zero emissions in the latter half of this century. The recent actions of three large US based companies (Chevron, ExxonMobil and Occidental Petroleum Corporation) in joining the OGCI is seen as significant as a step change towards a greener future for all.

September 2018
Oil Production Expected To Tighten Towards 2019

A number of market conditions are shaping and looking to influence the global production of crude oil and gas. Oil markets are expecting demand to remain strong but production may come under threat from a number of external factors towards the end of 2018. The situation in Venezuela is seeing fragile production, in Iran there is an expected downturn due to US sanctions and Saudi Arabia is looking to sell, but only at the right price.

Oil Production Expected To Tighten Towards 2019

The forecasted squeeze has been predicted by the influential International Energy Agency (IEA). The head of the IEA is on record as summarising the current global supply chain as being very challenging. It is looking like a period of instability could be upon us regarding the oil and gas industry sector with a particular focus on the supply chain.

The IEA operates to provide a platform for best practice and energy polices for its membership which consist of nations rather than organisations. Their stated mission offers a focus on four areas including “energy security, economic development, environmental awareness and engagement worldwide”. This focus covers all of the core aspects of energy supply, demand, production, management and other factors creating policies for the collective good.

August 2018
Oil Supply Shortage Forecasted For Q4 2018

Reports are appearing on the speculation of price of crude oil increasing to $90 per barrel by the end of 2018. Production and oil output from two major producers Iran and Venezuela are being forecasted to decline. Venezuela is going through a period of significant upheaval with inflation estimated to hit 1 million percent by the end of the year according to the IMF (International Monetary Fund). This would see a major impact on oil production putting it on course to become one of the worst hyperinflationary crises in recent history.

Oil Supply Shortage Forecasted For Q4 2018

Iran oil production is expected to be impacted by recent statements from the U.S. in relation to sanctions on Iran following the recent decision to pull the U.S. out of an international agreement to curb Iran's nuclear program. Iran is the fifth largest oil producer in the world and ongoing instability in the market and an under supply will add further to the increase in crude oil barrel prices. Crude oil across the globe is being consumed faster than it is being produced, raising the prospect of an increase in oil prices in the coming years.

Oil prices received a boost on news that Saudi Arabia has reduced output in July 2018 by around 200,000 barrels per day from June 2018 output levels. This level of reduced output was reportedly as a direct result of a lack of demand for oil at the price point that Saudi Arabia (Aramco) was looking for. This lead to reduced output rather than providing oil as a lower market value which would have driven the price down.

Oil & Gas Asset Managers Urge More Climate Change Efforts

An open letter has been submitted to the Financial Times newspaper calling for the Oil & Gas industry to be “more transparent and take responsibility for all of its emissions”. Sixty of the largest global investment funds that oversee around $10 trillion US dollars’ worth of assets are now calling for the Oil & Gas industry to take a view where they “strongly encourage all companies in this sector to clarify how they see their future in a low-carbon world”. Clearly the message from investors is that the industry should take the Paris agreement more seriously with defined strategies for all areas of operations and usage of their outputs.

Oil & Gas Asset Managers Urge More Climate Change Efforts

The open letter refers to seeing a reduction in the carbon footprint for the sector on a global basis as outlined at the 2015 Climate Change Conference in Paris which focused on attaining a global agreement for agreed reductions. On 12 December 2015, the participating 196 countries agreed, by consensus, to the final global pact, the Paris Agreement, to reduce emissions as part of the method for reducing greenhouse gas. The members agreed to reduce their carbon output "as soon as possible" and to do their best to keep global warming "to well below 2 °C".

According to the organising committee at the outset of the talks, the expected key result was an agreement to set a goal of limiting global warming to "well below 2 °C" Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. The agreement calls for zero net anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions to be reached during the second half of the 21st century. In the adopted version of the Paris Agreement, the parties will also "pursue efforts to" limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C. The 1.5 °C goal will require zero emissions sometime between 2030 and 2050, according to some scientists.

USA Petroleum Demand The Highest Since 2007

A recent comment from API (American Petroleum Institute) Chief Economist Dean Foreman has indicated that USA petroleum demand recently achieved a high of 20.6 million barrels per day which is the highest recorded since 2007 before the last recession. The data comes from the American Petroleum Institute (API) being recognised as the largest USA trade association for the oil and natural gas industry. To satisfy demand, domestic refineries utilised 91.5 percent of their capacity.

USA Petroleum Demand The Highest Since 2007

He was quoted as saying “As the US’s leading position in oil and natural gas markets advanced in March, consumers continue to enjoy affordable prices at the pump. Economic strength at home and abroad has spurred a virtuous cycle of US oil demand, production, and exports that in turn have helped to reinforce prices and motivate even greater infrastructure investment and US drilling activity. The proverbial April surprise was that the US drilling rig count eclipsed 1,000 for the first time since April 2015 and positioned the US for further supply growth.”

The American Petroleum Institute represents about 650 corporations involved in production, refinement, distribution, and many other aspects of the petroleum industry. The association describes its mission as to influence public policy in support of a strong, viable USA oil and natural gas industry. API's chief functions on behalf of the industry include advocacy, negotiation and lobbying with governmental, legal, and regulatory agencies; research into economic, toxicological, and environmental effects, establishment and certification of industry standards and education outreach. API both funds and conducts research related to many aspects of the petroleum industry.

Investments In The Oil & Gas Industry Sector Need To Hit $20 Trillion Over 20 Years

Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser has stated in a recent conference that the global Oil and Gas industry needs to invest $20 trillion over the next 20 years to meet the demands of global consumption and also to create new sources of supply. He also stated that the recent setbacks in oil price had, harmed the industry over recent years with around $1 trillion in lost investments taking place. The main reason for new investments is due to historical fields being exhausted and new ones needing to be accessed with exploration, well development and production to be funded.

Investments In The Oil & Gas Industry Sector Need To Hit $20 Trillion Over 20 Years

Mr Amin Nasser was quoted as saying "Future investments will only come if investors are convinced that oil will be allowed to compete on a level playing field, that oil is worth so much more, and that oil is here for the foreseeable future," Nasser said. "That is why we must push back on the idea that the world can do without proven and reliable sources. We must challenge mistaken assumptions about the speed with which alternatives will penetrate markets."

Saudi Aramco, officially the Saudi Arabian Oil Company, most popularly known just as Aramco (formerly Arabian-American Oil Company), is a Saudi Arabian national petroleum and natural gas company based in Dhahran. Saudi Aramco's market value has been estimated at between $2 trillion and $10 trillion, making it the most valuable company in the world. It is one of the largest companies in the world by revenue. Saudi Aramco has both the world's second-largest proven crude oil reserves, at more than 260 billion barrels (4.1×1010 m3), and second-largest daily oil production.

US Oil Output Reaches Record Levels Since 1970 At 10 Million Barrels A Day

The US government has reported that crude oil production exceeded the 10 million barrels a day level during November 2017 for the first time since a peak output in 1970. Over the last four decades, the US oil industry has never matched the peak output achieved in 1970 until now. The largest producer of crude oil per day is Russia with in excess of 10 million barrels a day closely followed by Saudi Arabia with the US just behind.

US Oil Output Reaches Record Levels Since 1970 At 10 Million Barrels A Day

Saudi Arabia has recently cut back production due to the OPEC deal with Russia and others to keep production low and supply levels off the market. It has also been predicted that oil production could increase in the US to in excess of 12 million barrels a day. Crude oil prices have been rising steadily over the last twelve months so the increase in output is significant.

US oil production in 2018 looks to be on the rise with forecasts for further increases. This will be supported by shale production which is expected to contribute around 1 million barrels a day per year which was not in existence thirty plus years ago.

Green Shoots Of Recovery With The Oil & Gas Industry Recruiting Again

On a global scale the Oil and Gas industry sector looks to be stabilising and actually expanding. With each gradual increase in the price of crude oil we are seeing more and more confidence in the sector. The last three years have seen very depressed levels of investment, recruitment and a general positive outlook on the sector, not just in the UK, but also across all territories globally. One signal of recovery is the recruitment indicators for the sector, which look to be in a hiring mode as we head into 2018. This is a strong sign of companies in the sector stabilising to new low oil and gas prices and increased competition from the renewable energy sector.

Green Shoots Of Recovery With The Oil & Gas Industry Recruiting Again

A recent report created by from recruitment firm NES Global Talent and Oilandgasjopbsearch.com shows that that across 3,000 oil and gas decision makers around 60% had plans to recruit new staff member into 2018 over the next 12 months. This is a good sign of stability in the global industry which has seen almost 500,000 jobs been lost in the last three years. One item for consideration will be the attraction of first time workers and graduates to the sector. The last three years have seen a very low demand for recruitment as a general statement and the next generation of employees and management may not wish to be involved with a volatile and in some cases unpopular career choice to be involved with the Oil and Gas industry.

As such, the situation moving forward is expected to see a shortage or resources, lower skilled and qualified workers and also increased workloads for people in existing posts. The biggest threat to the industry may not be sustainability, reserves or actual commodity prices, but it may come from an actual lack of quality personnel, willing to work in the Oil and Gas sector.

Natural Gas In The Spotlight

Natural Gas is a major component of energy consumption in the UK and also on a global basis. The United Kingdom produced 60% of its consumed natural gas in 2010. In five years from 2005 the United Kingdom moved from almost gas self-sufficient to 40% gas import in 2010. Gas was almost 40% of total primary energy supply (TPES) and electricity more than 45% in 2010. Underground storage was about 5% of annual demand and more than 10% of net imports. The UK is consuming less energy than it did in 2010 and more of the energy we are consuming is coming from renewable sources.

Natural Gas In The Spotlight

All EU countries imported more energy than they exported in 2014. In terms of rankings, of the 28 EU countries the UK was the 12th most dependent on foreign sources of energy; less reliant than Germany and Italy but more reliant than Sweden and the Netherlands. Most of the gas we import comes through pipelines laid underneath the sea bed. We have established pipelines with Norway and the Netherlands which accounted for 61% and 7% of our 2015 gas imports respectively. We also have established pipelines with Belgium but gas imports from Belgium only accounted for 0.4% of our 2015 gas imports.

The remaining gas imports came to the UK as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) with LNG from Qatar making up 29% of the UK’s gas imports in 2015. Natural gas made up around 29% of the UK’s fuel imports in 2015 with Norway again being a key import partner for this type of fuel. From a UK production perspective Natural gas production rose 8.8 per cent on last year 2016/17 to 25.5 million tonnes, having grown 22.7 per cent in 2015/16 from 2014/15. These more recent figures may present a picture that confidence is continuing to return to the sector after a number of challenging years.

Is The Global Crude Oil Barrel Price Stabilising?

The chart below presents the last five years of price point history for a barrel of crude oil in US dollars. You will see that this is a picture of two halves. Four and Five years ago the price was as high as $110 dollars a barrel and remained consistent for a good 24-month period. However, volatility in the sector appeared in 2014 leading to a record low in modern times to just below $30 US dollars. More recent times have seen the oil price increase to around the $50 US dollar level and the chart below shows a reasonable level of stability.

Is The Global Crude Oil Barrel Price Stabilising?

The oil industry sector is very price sensitive for investments in new oil and gas exploration projects. Globally this has seen an impact of reduced investment across the board for all aspects right from capital plant to consumables and he demand for human resource and expertise. More recently traditional oil exploration methods found in the known locations is now being challenged by new shale deposit areas. Shale exploration looks to be the predominant theme in oil markets for 2017 and is expected to continue into 2018. This new resource may leave the prospect of an increase in the price of crude oil less likely.

Vendor Consolidation With Grayford Industrial

The biggest issue facing procurement professionals regarding MRO spares is the vast range of products involved and their unique unpredictably of demand. Even relatively small production facilities are likely at some stage to require spares for: bearings; power transmission components; pneumatics and hydraulics; filtration; heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); chemicals and lubricants; fasteners; hardware and tools.

Vendor Consolidation With Grayford Industrial

This can potentially leave your business trying to deal with a large number of suppliers in various geographical locations, each with different ordering and delivery systems and processes. US Levy Suggestion For Oil Imports To The USA For 2017

With the recent elections in the USA, the new administration has suggested that am import tax would be levied which would have a large implication on crude oil prices and product globally. Non USA based oil producers may have to look at other markets if the USA closes the door on levy free trade for crude oil. The introduction of a border adjustment tax would impact of the world’s largest economy and send waves around the world. This would be especially relevant to global commodities such as crude oil and natural gas.

US Levy Suggestion For Oil Imports To The USA For 2017

The USA is a large importer of crude oil with over 80 countries being used for the sourcing of oil, natural gas and refined petroleum products. The top five importers include Canada, Columbia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. The USA consumes around 1 in every 5 barrels produced on a global basis. Around 50% of this is imported and 50% is soured from its own domestic production. 2017 will be an interesting year for the Oil and Gas industries making it no different from the volatility of the last few years.

During February we secured supply chain support from IMI Precision Engineering. In March we launched our MRO Supply Chain Solutions Service. April saw the opening of our new office location in Poland. May continued a negative outlook from the UK oil and Gas production industry sector in the North Sea. After many years of sanctions Iran appeared back on the scene ready to do trade with the world. Grayford attended the Hassi Messaoud Expo Algeria 15th To 17th November 2016 and this capped off a good year for the company.

40 Years of Gas & Oil Production In The North Sea - What Does The Future Hold?

It is over 40 years since Gas was first discovered in the North Sea and almost 40 years since Oil was first extracted in the same area. Over the last 40 years the industry has had many good years with buoyant revenues and a thriving industry being in place. More recently the global demand for oil and gas has reduced, new fossil fuels have been found elsewhere and new techniques for extraction are being created. Fracking allows for a lower cost compared to North Sea oil and gas production for example. Costs have been declining in the UK with operating costs of extraction for Crude Oil coming down from 29$ a barrel to around 17$ a barrel.

40 Years of Gas & Oil Production In The North Sea - What Does The Future Hold?

UK North Sea production rose 2015 for the first time in 15 years from a peak output in 1999 at around 5 million barrels per day. Employment statistics from industry body, Oil & Gas UK, indicate the North Sea industrial sector supports directly and indirectly around 330,000 jobs, down from an estimated 450,000 in 2014. It will be interesting to see what the future holds. Globally there are reserves with new technologies allowing for a lower cost production. This is compounded by a reduction in demand for fossil fuels specifically oil. It will be interesting to see what the next 40 years will bring to the sector.

Reskilling For Oil & Gas Jobs In The UK

As the UK oil and gas industry sector continues to decline news from Scotland is that a new transition training and development fund has been launched to assist in the redevelopment of skills. This level of support is a reflection of the current state of the oil & gas industry in the UK with depressed prices and low investment. The news was launched at the opening event of the Statoil headquarters in Aberdeen which is looking to develop the Mariner field with production expected to start in 2018 This is good news for the UK oil & gas industry.

Reskilling For Oil & Gas Jobs In The UK

This news comes as the latest figures show oil and gas value drop as production levels increased. The value of crude is now at its lowest levels since around 1999, however production output in 2016 has seen increases of around 20%. Prices have dropped to below US$50 (£37) a barrel, compared to the high point of US$147 (£111) in July 2008. Expansion Opportunities in Iran As Sanctions Lift Takes Effect

Iranian government departments have announced during July 2016 a new Iran Petroleum Contract (IPC) deal after sanctions were lifted over a year ago back in January 2015. The chief government economic advisory body (the Resistance Economy Headquarters) has just given the approval and go ahead for IPC after a long period of negotiations within the Iranian government. The final draft is expected to be approved in due course and the first contracts awarded in September 2016.

Expansion Opportunities in Iran As Sanctions Lift Takes Effect

Proved oil reserves in Iran, according to its government, rank fifth largest in the world at approximately 150 billion barrels (24×109 m3) as of 2015 which is approximately 10% of the world's total proven petroleum reserves. At 2006 rates of production, Iran's oil reserves would last 98 years if no new oil was found. Iran has more than a century of history in exploration and production; the first successful exploration well was Masjid Suleiman-1 on May 26, 1908. Since then, based on the latest oil and gas reports, 145 hydrocarbon fields and 297 oil and gas reservoirs have been discovered in Iran, with many fields having multiple pay zones. A total of 102 fields are oil and the remaining 43 are gas, and there are 205 oil reservoirs and 92 natural gas reservoirs. According to Iran Energy Balance Sheet 78 of these fields are currently active, with 62 onshore and 16 offshore, leaving 67 fields inactive at present. Some 23 hydrocarbon fields lie in border areas and are shared between Iran and adjacent countries, including Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Turkmenistan.

Saudi Arabia Scales Back Renewable Energy Plans

Saudi Arabia has made recent announcements to cuts renewables target to 10% of energy mix from 50% and is reducing renewable power targets. The world’s biggest oil exporter is planning to use more natural gas, moving away from targets originally established when crude prices were three times their current values, according to Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih. “Our energy mix has shifted more toward gas, so the need for high targets from renewable sources is not there anymore,” Al-Falih said. “The previous target of 50 percent from renewable sources was an initial target and it was built on high oil prices” near $150 a barrel, he said.

Saudi Arabia Scales Back Renewable Energy Plans

Saudi Arabia, which holds the world’s second-largest crude reserves, will double natural gas production, according to Al-Falih, and the government will expand the distribution network to the western part of the nation. Generating more power from gas and renewables should make more crude available for export, which would otherwise be burned for electricity for domestic use. Saudi Arabia has become the world's largest oil producer and exporter, controlling the world's second largest oil reserves, and the sixth largest gas reserves.

North Sea Oil Receipts Hit Record Low For 50 Years

The United Kingdom government has announced that it has incurred a loss from North Sea Gas and Oil production for the first time since records began nearly 50 years ago. Gas and Oil production generated negative receipts in 2015-16 of -£24m, compared with +£2.15bn the year before. Petroleum Revenue Tax (PRT) revenue was -£562m, following refunds to companies, while corporation tax revenue fell by 74% over the year to £538m. The North Sea industry sector contributed £10.9bn to the Treasury just five years ago in respect to actual output for Gas and Oil production.

North Sea Oil Receipts Hit Record Low For 50 Years

In March 2016, the chancellor announced a major update of the North Sea tax system as a proactive action to the difficulties facing the UK Gas and Oil sectors. As of January 2015, the North Sea was the world's most active offshore drilling region with 173 active rigs drilling. By May 2016, the North Sea Gas and Oil industry was financially stressed by the reduced oil prices, and calling for government support. It will be interesting to see how the UK sector performs throughout 2016.
